Activities

Children's Summer Programs

·         Camp Frog (August 1-5) - A summer week for children who have completed kindergarten through 8th grade. 9 AM to 3 PM each day with counselors from Camp Lutheran in Butler PA

Community Outreach

·         NA - Narcotics Anonymous meets in the Church Undercroft on Saturdays beginning at 11:00 AM.

·         IHN Dinners (February 7,  and May 29 in 2012) -  Interfaith Hospitality Network volunteers meet several times throughout the year at St John's Lutheran church. Volunteers prepare meals and spend time with families in need. Volunteers arrive between 4:30 - 5:30. Volunteers are needed and welcome. A sign-up sheet to assist is on the table in the Narthex under the calendars.

Gifts from Afar - A yearly parish outreach to the needy at Epiphany; January 6th each year.

Missions Support

·         Global Missions - The congregation supports the global outreach of the NALC through its offerings and budget.

·         Local Missions - The congregation supports the local outreach of the local NALC affiliated missionaries through its offerings and budget.

·         Mission of the Month - The congregation supports the local outreach of the NALC through its offerings and budget.

Opportunities for Friendship and Shared Community

·         Children's Annual Christmas Pageant

·         Little Saints - A Pre-School Program

·         After Worship Social – Members and their families gather at a local restaurant to socialize.

·         Sunday before Ash Wednesday - Pre-Lenten Potluck - a noon potluck dinner to which all worshippers are invited.

·         First Sunday in December after worship - St. Nicholas Gathering an all age, all parish gathering for games, fun, activities, stories and food.

·         Friendship Hours after worship - Coffee, tea, punch, dessert, and a friendly meeting together after worship.

·         Lenten Soup Suppers - Wednesdays at 6:30 PM precedes Lenten evening Prayer.

·         Easter Sunday at 8:30 AM - Easter Breakfast for all worshippers, guests and visitors on Easter Sunday a light breakfast between the Eucharist’s in the Undercroft.

Ministries

Christian Education Ministries

·         Adult Bible Class meets from 9:15 - 10: 00 AM on Sundays in the Upper Room of the Christian Education Building taught by Pastor Mozolak.

·         Altar Guild - Women and men who assist in preparing the altar and chancel for worship

·         Children's Sunday Church School meets from 9:15 - 10:15 AM on Sundays in the Christian Education Building (Lower Level) grades: preschool through 8th grade
from post Labor Day through May.

·         First Communion Class - Taught and scheduled as needed for children (usually at 3rd grade level) for adults (arranged with the Pastor).

·         Mid-Week Bible Study - Adults meet several times a year 

·         New Member Classes - The Inquirer's Class meets as announced at a time convenient to participants for studying Christian faith, Lutheran teachings and membership Lutherans are received by transfer of membership.

·         Reading Well (Adult Christian Book Group) - After reading well and deeply a place to talk with people of faith gathering words and paragraphs thoughts and images in the books of Bible and belief. The group meets as scheduled. Previously discussed works: John Grisham's The Testament, Morris West's The Devil's Advocate, Graham Greene's Power and the Glory, C. S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters, Angela Hunt's The Note

·         Weekday Church School meets on Wednesdays from September through May. Participants meet from 4:30 - 6:00 PM in the Upper Room of the Education Building for Grades 3 through 8. A three year cycle is taught covering Old Testament, New Testament, Catechism, Christian Worship and History in preparation for Confirmation. Taught by Pastor Mozolak and an assistant.

·         Worship Assistants - Adult members may volunteer to be trained as worship assistants helping to lead worship and publically read the Scripture. Youth may be trained to serve as acolytes.

Counseling Ministries

·         Counseling Center (a site of Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute [PPI]) - For first appointment call PPI at 421/ 661-1239 or 877/ 661-9623. St. Stephen's site number is 412/ 279-5452.

"PPI is an interfaith counseling agency that integrates into the counseling process resources from the behavioral sciences and a client's religious faith. All PPI counselors respect and appreciate the value of religion and spirituality in a person's life. Various counseling modalities are available. These include individual, couple, family and group therapy." "All PPI counselors hold graduate-level degrees, licenses, or certificates in one or more of the mental health disciplines, including: Pastoral Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology, and Professional Counseling. All PPI counselors adhere to the Standards and Code of Ethics of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors."

Evangelistic Ministries

·         Outreach Team - A parish Evangelism Committee whose members contact guests and visitors who have worshipped at St. Stephen the committee also in charge of sharing the message of the Gospel and the congregation with the community.

Family Ministries

·         Pre-Marriage Counseling - As part of the ministry of the Pastor call the church for an appointment at 412/ 279-5868. Pre-Marriage Counseling is a requirement before marriage for both members and non-members.

Men's Ministries

·         Men's Prayer Breakfast (2011 date TBD) - A yearly gathering of men on a Saturday morning with a guest speaker and breakfast.

Music Ministries

·         Adult Choir - Teen and adult members of this choir practice on Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:00 PM. The choir sings at Sunday worship and Festivals from September through early June.

·         Youth Musicians (Currently this group is inactive)

Prayer Ministries

·         Prayer Chain - A group of about a dozen Christians pray for people and needs - ask for prayer by calling the church office at 412/ 279-5868 or emailing the church at: faithfamily.ststephenscott@verizon.net.

·         Adult Retreats - When announced, usually a weekend away for spiritual growth and mutual caring.
